ClearLine Forensics

Case Study

Residential Fire Investigation

Determining the origin and cause of a residential garage fire and evaluating whether recent appliance servicing played a role.

Background

A fire occurred at a single-family residence with visible damage throughout the garage. ClearLine Forensics was retained to determine the origin and cause, with focus on whether recent appliance servicing played a role.

Investigation

Detailed fire origin and cause analysis in the garage area. Particular attention given to laundry appliances and electrical systems.

A repair contractor had previously serviced the washer and dryer. Both appliances carefully inspected along with wall assemblies and utility connections.

Key Findings

Area of Origin

Garage, near but not at the laundry appliances.

Ignition Source

An extension cord improperly routed through the exterior wall showed damage consistent with electrical failure.

Contributing Factors

The extension cord had been used as a permanent wiring solution to power an exterior feature, violating code and creating unnecessary fire risk.

Outcome

Neither the washer nor dryer contributed to the fire. Both units and the wall receptacle showed no involvement, supporting the appliance repair contractor's position that their prior work was unrelated to the ignition sequence.

Takeaways

Thoroughly establishing the exact area of origin is essential. By narrowing the investigation to the correct zone, it becomes possible to identify the specific failure (in this case, improper electrical practices) while ruling out unrelated equipment.
